The History of Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery has changed a great deal since doctors began using such procedures to repair birth defects and repair facial wounds caused by war or service. The procedures that were once a necessity became popular among rich people striving for perfection and eventually became an accessible option for anyone wanting to reshape part of their face or body.

Molding the Body

The idea of reshaping or molding the body is not a new practice. Cosmetic surgeries have been done for roughly 4,000 years. It wasn’t until the 18th century, however, that surgeons began using anesthesia during this reconstruction. Furthermore, it wasn’t done in America until 1891 when John Roe reduced the risks associated with it.

Repairing the Body from War

World War II brought on a surge of cosmetic surgeries as men returned from the war with facial wounds. This type of surgery was used to reconstruct and reshape the faces of men who were missing parts or had abnormal shapes due to wartime fighting. Though doctors couldn’t remove the agony from the soldier’s minds, they could fix the soldier’s appearance.

The Changing Purpose of Cosmetic Surgeries

The purpose of this type of surgery has changed over time. While it once served a valuable service to people who needed facial and body reconstruction, it has become a way for people to change features they simply don’t like.

Some surgeries, such as rhinosplasty, are necessary for proper breathing, but more often than not, cosmetic surgery is done for purely aesthetic reasons.

Cosmetic surgery is an operation performed on many people in the general population to make themselves look and feel better. Our society is obsessed with beauty and perfection, making cosmetic surgery an option for anyone interested in changing the way they look.

Surgery for the Rich

Celebrities used to try and hide it if they did have cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance or reduce aging and it would turn into a huge media frenzy if someone was “outted”. These days, however, celebrities are not as afraid to talk about having cosmetic surgery and they certainly aren’t the only ones having it done.

Though cosmetic surgery was once considered only for rich people, it has grown in popularity and has become more widely accepted in recent years.

Risks and Side Effects of Cosmetic Surgeries

The goal of the surgery is to improve your look or reshape deformities, but there are also risks associated with the procedure. You may experience nerve damage, blood loss, infection, tissue damage or scarring. The other risk is that the end result of the surgery may not be what you desire. Changes from cosmetic surgery are permanent and additional surgeries might be required to correct size, shape or functionality.

Dry Skin Treatments The Natural Way

Dry skin, occurs most commonly on the lower legs, arms, the sides of the abdomen and thighs and is a very common condition. It’s easily treatable naturally today when you know how to take care of it both inside and out.

The dermis is the layer of skin just beneath the epidermis that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain. The skin contains hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels. The blood vessels in the dermis provide nourishment and waste removal to its own cells and to the epidermis.

If you have a forced-air furnace it may make skin even drier than it already is. Serious skin complications, including a dry skin condition, can occur in people with type 2 diabetes. Dry skin can also be caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight and a lot of medications.

When the oil glands don’t supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dry and dehydrated. Dry skin can also be due to a genetic condition but it’s not common. Some drugs, including diuretics like Lasix, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your doctor and get a drug insert from your pharmacist.

Consider taking cod liver oil or fish oil supplements, in the liquid form, every day. Good nutrition from living foods – foods that are alive and full of energy – will help nourish your skin from the inside out. Eat at least two organic apples every day especially while working to clear up your skin; apples are good for your skin health. Eat organic so you can eat the pesticide-free skin (most of the apple pectin is in the skin), which helps with constipation too.

Only use very mild cleansers or mild soaps if you must use a soap or cleanser. Natural treatments should always be the first type of treatment to consider when you want to heal your skin and take the best care of it. For any skin condition, it is always better to take a natural approach first

I buy virgin coconut oil by the gallon; it’s cheaper for a whole gallon of coconut oil than a small jar of department store, name-brand moisturizer. After a soothing bath or shower at night just before bedtime, apply a very thin layer of coconut oil over your entire body. It will even last on your skin through your shower in the morning. And use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long; but better yet, apply even more coconut oil.

If you have acne, eczema or any type of skin condition coconut oil will treat and quickly heal these too. When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been bleached, refined, processed and deodorized.

Many skin conditions can be converted into clear, healthy skin by using natural home remedies. Skin that is not clean encourages the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on the surface.

Usually most of us take care of dry skin without seeing our doctor, but sometimes we can’t avoid it. Following some of the above natural treatments, your dry skin should be well on its way to recovery and clearing up. If you’re still worried about your dry or damaged skin, or the problems persist too long, see your skin doctor.

The Basics of Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgery that uses a steel tube to suck out extra fat from your body. The procedure allows people to reshape their bodies, especially problem areas that go unchanged because diet and exercise are not enough.

The Importance of Having Realistic Expectations

Liposuction isn’t an overnight cure for obesity. Possible candidates for liposuction need to be aware of the limitations of the procedure and how long it can take to see results post-surgery.

You will lose inches, not weight, from having liposuction. In fact, it can take several weeks to three months to see the results. The area worked on will be swollen in the weeks following the surgery.

Additionally, having fat removed from one section of your body, like your abdomen, will not affect the rest of your body. In time you will be able to see your noticeably smaller waist in the mirror and you may be able to fit into smaller jeans, but if you still have extra pockets of fat in other places on your body, they will remain. Liposuction is not a total body restructuring process. The purpose of liposuction is to take care of the fat in problem areas that don’t change with diet and exercise.

Liposuction and Scarring

The number one thing that keeps people from having liposuction, aside from the cost, is the fear of scarring. Though years ago scarring was a big problem, modern technology makes it possible to have minimal scarring. There will be two small incisions which are normally made in spots that can be hidden pretty well, like under the arm and near the bikini line.

Dark scars don’t last, either. You can expect them to fade to a white line within a year after the surgery until they are nearly invisible. If you are still afraid of having unsightly scars, there are products on the market to reduce the look and pigmentation of scars.

The Cost of Liposuction

Liposuction is considered cosmetic surgery and, therefore, is not covered by most health insurance programs.

The average liposuction on the abdomen runs around $8,000. Having multiple areas done at one time costs more and having other areas, like the sagging fat under your arms, costs much less. The actual cost of the liposuction varies quite a bit form surgeon to surgeon and can also depend on where you have it done. Some surgeons do outpatient treatment in their office, while others use a hospital to perform the surgery.

Deciding on Liposuction

As with any surgery, Liposuction poses some risks. In addition to the usual side effects and risks from anesthesia, you will likely experience:

- Pain
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Numbness
- Scarring
- Limited movement

Since the side effects wear off rather quickly and the fat will be gone forever, you have to decide if liposuction is the right option for you. Family members and your doctor can offer opinions to consider, but the decision to have liposuction is completely up to you.

Remove Scars By Laser Surgery

Most people would probably have scars which they want to remove for aesthetic or other reasons. Facial scars could be the in thing now if you have watched the Pirates of the Caribbean. Some even consider it a fashion statement. However, most people would probably like their facial scars to be removed.

There are many methods being used to remove scars and one of the most convenient methods would to remove scars by cosmetic laser surgery. However, we must first understand what scars are.

A scar is the body’s natural way of healing itself by replacing lost or damaged skin. Scars may occur for many reasons such as from surgery, injuries, cuts, infections or inflammation of body tissues. Scars can come with different appearances and forms like just being flat, lumpy, sunken, colored, itchy or even being painful. The look of a scar will depend on factors such as skin type, location on the body, the direction and type of the injury, age of the person and his/her nutrition.

Scars usually fade with the passing of time and many scars do not disappear completely. Cosmetics and make up can help to cover light unsightly scars. Some scars can be minimized or lightened by certain dermatological treatments.

Some of the techniques that help to remove or improve the scars are dermabrasion, chemical peels, collagen injections, cryosurgery, skin grafts, surgical scar revision, laser resurfacing, and autologous fat transfer just to name a few of the many methods.

The laser scar removal technique can reduce the appearance of keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and atrophic scars. Unfortunately, people with darker skin may not be able to use laser scar removal. People who suffer from skin disorders such as psoriasis, cystic acne, and dermatitis may also not be able to undergo laser scar removal method. People who are on medication such as isotretinoin for acne must stop using the medication for at least half a year before they are able to undergo the laser treatment.

During laser scar removal, the laser is moved along the scar. This vaporizes or removes a layer of skin and exposes a more natural-looking skin, which heals over time to minimize scar appearance. There are several types of laser treatments and each has its own benefits.

The laser scar removal procedure is often performed under local anesthesia. Sometimes, general anesthesia may also used if treatment is made over a large area of the body. The laser surgery is usually performed from just a few minutes to an hour long or so depending on the patient’s condition and the methods used.

The patient’s recovery process can begin as early as three to four days after the laser treatment. Speed of skin regeneration will largely depend on the type of laser surgery method used, personal healing ability and adherence to medical instructions.

The most common side effect of laser scar removal surgery is skin hyper pigmentation. This condition can be made worse through sun exposure. Infection or allergic reactions are also possible side effects.

Do consult with your dermatologist to get an informed opinion to see if you are suitable for laser scar removal surgery.
