Buying a Car at an Online Auto Auction

For those that don’t know auto auctions are the quickest and easiest ways for banks and government agencies to get rid of seized and repossessed vehicles. These auctions can be found all over the United States and can occur daily, weekly, and monthly and are a good place to find the automobile you’ve been searching for at a significant savings.

Here are six quick reasons why buying a car at an auction can be a good idea.

1. When you find a good auction site you will have piece of mind knowing they stake their reputation on providing a good experience.

2. Seized auto auctions can be a lot of fun. The sheer volume of vehicles to choose from can be quite an experience.

3. It can help you keep your budget intact when it comes to buying a new/used car.

4. You can set a maximum bid level that keeps you from overbidding and letting your emotions get the best of you.

5. You can save time and effort by not having to visit high pressure dealerships or driving from private sale to private sale hoping to find the car you are looking for.

6. Seized auto auctions are a great place to get great bargains on just about any type of vehicle. If you are interested in a high end vehicle, but don’t care for the retail price tag, then government seized auto auctions are great for you.

As you probably already know, car dealers will do anything to get you into the car of your dreams. Dealers attend these private auctions to buy cars at a fraction of their retail value and subsequently turn them around, increase the price, and sell them to you at a dealership at a huge profit. Just think how much you could save if you bypassed your dealership and purchased directly from their sources. Car dealers know this, and they go to great lengths to protect this knowledge from the general public.

When you start bidding remember to stick with your plan, bid with your brain and don’t let your emotions get the better of you. Don’t get caught in a bidding war because one thing you have to keep in mind is the buyer’s premium. This is usually in the 5% range and is a commission that is paid to the auction house on top of the winning bid on the vehicle. This means if you place a winning bid of say $20,000 you will pay an additional $1,000 to the auction house for their services. This can be a problem if you didn’t take that into account when you got caught up in a bidding frenzy in which you used every last dollar you had. Use your head and you’ll do fine.

Online auto auctions are a great place to find the car or truck you have been looking for at a rather large discount. By doing your research and bidding smartly you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars on great cars.

Ford Motor Company On A Selling Spree

In what are looking more and more like a fire sale, Ford Motor Company is reportedly set on selling off British luxury marques Jaguar and Land Rover. Having hired investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to work the sale into an appealing package, it seems that Ford will cut its losses with both UK subsidiaries in an effort to raise funds for the core production. The BBC reported that the British Government has contacted Ford concerned over the future of the 19,000 Jaguar and Land Rover employees whose jobs are suddenly at risk. And according to one BBC reporter, Ford’s to blame for this dire state of affairs.

It’s almost comical. In response to the hyperbole of questions that surround rumors that Ford Motor Company will sell off Jaguar and Land Rover in a bid to raise funds, Ford issued a press release yesterday that touted Jaguar safety. Specifically, the Blue Oval mentioned that the slow selling Jaguar XJ sedan had made it onto Forbes Magazine’s list of the top 20 safest cars for 2007. Ford sited that Forbes came by this rating honestly; using data from Consumer Reports, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute. FoMoCo listed some of those features that made the big Jag so safe:

“The XJ is well-equipped with a number of standard safety features, such as advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Reverse Park Control and the Adaptive Restraint Technology System, which tailors airbag deployment to the needs of the driver and passenger based on the severity of the impact, occupant’s weight and seat position.”

Okay, now if everyone in the market for a $60K luxury sedan would just direct themselves to their nearest Jaguar dealer - all would be right as rain.

It’s well known that after having successfully sold off Aston Martin, Ford is looking to rid itself of the other two British marques in its Premier Auto Group (PAG): Jaguar and Land Rover. The trouble is that Volvo maybe up for sale, too. What’s stranger still is that the Volvo division has done well by FoMoCo. The carmaker is profitable and sales are strong. Still, some of Ford’s investors want a clean slate and that means throwing the fiscally good out along with the fiscally bad (Aston Martin turned a profit last year).

A PAG rep. told Top Gear that Volvo wasn’t officially up for sale. But in the past, they’ve said the same of Jaguar.

Electric Cars, What Are They Up To?

The all-electric sportscar that caught the world’s attention last year is about to do it again this year as UK auto magazine CAR has published spy shots of the Tesla roadster undergoing on road testing near Lotus Headquarters in England.

CAR reports that what will be the world’s first electric sportscar will boast Porsche 911-style performance times; 0-60 mph in a scant 4.0 seconds and be based on the Lotus Elise’s chassis. Further, Lotus will be the manufacturer. The GBP 41,000 ($79,000) sports cars are set to sell this autumn.

Another one is that Car & Driver has road test of the new Honda Civic Hybrid over on their website. They also point out that while the Toyota Prius can take off from a stop using only an electric motor, the Civic Hybrid can’t. It is a bit odd, considering that the car is going for the ultimate gas mileage. The Honda Civic has a weak 20 hp electric motor while the Toyota Prius has a much more powerful 67 hp electric motor.

The dashboard of the Toyota looks pretty cool from the images I see on Car & Driver, it looks very futuristic. The EPA quotes the Toyota Hybrid gets 49 miles per gallon in city driving, and 51 miles per gallon on the highway. However it is hard achieve those numbers according to Car & Driver. Basically, if you put your foot in the throttle at all you’re going not getting anywhere near those mileage figures. I’m not sure that even hybrid buyers want to be left behind by grandma the stoplight.

Also, I am not sure that the Smart car is the answer to our urban woes like Bob delicately claimed in his post, not when they’re predicting a list price over $20,000. I do think that the Global Electric Motorcar, the GEM Car, is the answer, however. Base price for the GEM Car is $6,995 and it runs on batteries. And there’s a 10% federal tax credit on the purchase price of a GEM Car, at least until the end of this year.

Oh, it’s not perfect, not unless you live in a very mild climate, anyway. Sorry, Bob. You’ll probably want to add the heater/defroster ($395), the hard doors ($1,595), the gel batteries ($395) and the windshield washer kit ($75), so your GEM Car will run you closer to $9,000. GEM is a wholly owned subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, by the way - don’t they own Smart Car, too?

Water Damaged Cars And Why You Do Not Want One

Looking around for a used vehicle to buy either as your first car or as a replacement for your last one can be a hassle enough by itself without having to worry about whether you’re going to end up buying a lemon.

You have to worry about financing, what kind of vehicle is best, and if it’s going to break down on you as soon as you get it home, but one thing that a lot of people don’t tend to think about when shopping for a new vehicle is if it has ever been completely submerged in water.

These vehicles aren’t always readily noticeable as having been submerged before. Dishonest car dealers and individuals looking to cheat you aren’t likely to tell you that a vehicle has been flooded, so you have to watch out for yourself.

One of the most dangerous things about vehicles that have been flooded can be is the possibility of mold growth in the interior of the car. It’s just as dangerous as the mold that can grow inside your home, but you’re less likely to notice it because most people don’t think about mold growing in their cars.

Sometimes bad car dealers will try to cover the odor of mold in the car with air or carpet fresheners. You never know if the mold has been completely removed from the car unless the carpet has been replaced and the interior cleaned by a professional.

Even the engine isn’t safe. Any flood waters the car has been exposed to contain sand, dirt, silt, or any number of debris that can work its way into the engine and cause it to malfunction. Even sewage can be found in some flood waters.

There are also electrical problems abound in vehicles that have been flooded before. Many things on a vehicle today are monitored not by manual gauges, but by electronics and trying to use these by powering on the car before it’s completely dried out will probably ruin them.

Look for rust in the trunk of the car, particularly around the headlights and smell the interior closely. If there’s a musty odor or you can detect a scented air or carpet freshener has been used, it’s probably a good idea to go somewhere else to find a vehicle.

Even if you purchase a vehicle history report off of a website, you might not get all the information on a vehicle. You’ll get any information that was reported to the insurance company and a claim was done on, but if the car was submerged and the person or dealer chooses to sell it without reporting the incident, they can.

Do Hybrid Cars Really Live up To All The Hype That We Hear?

The increase in gas prices as well as the effects of global warming believed to have been brought on by carbon emissions has driven the demand for hybrid vehicles that use less gas and run using a combination of gas and electricity.

The hybrid vehicle was introduced in the U.S. in 1999 and has been gradually increasing in popularity with its battery assisted electric motor that works in tandem with the gas engine. Because of the way they operate they consume less fuel and are very low in emitted pollutants that can harm the environment. Many people wonder if they really live up to all of the expectations.

For those who are interested in protecting the environment it is pretty much a no brainer to drive a hybrid since it has been proven through research that some of the better hybrid cars put off as much as 90% less harmful pollutants than that of a traditional gas powered vehicle. The people who drive hybrids enjoy the fact that the electric motor offers cleaner energy and gives the security of having the power of the gas engine when it is needed. This collaboration gives us a vehicle that not only has outstanding fuel economy but as stated before, dramatically reduces pollutants.

Because hybrid cars are much smaller than conventional automobiles as a whole they also do not require as large and engine. There are now some hybrid SUVs coming out but many hybrid purists feel that this is really defeating the purpose. The smaller hybrids of course use smaller engines which while not having a lot of power do have great fuel economy.

Now for the cons. As for now, the hybrid vehicles cost quite a bit more than a comparable conventional vehicle. You will pay on average around five thousand dollars more for the hybrid version of a particular car. However, if you intend to keep the car for a long time you will recoup a great deal on fuel. The cost of hybrids comes from the batteries that are currently used, as battery prices are reduced we can expect to see a reduction in the cost difference of Hybrids.

There is already one car company that is producing a totally electric car called the Tesla that runs on laptop batteries. The company is backed by some of the leaders of the internet industry and shows great promise as the first non gas powered vehicle that is also a true performance car as well with zero to sixty times under four seconds!

How To Find And Install Auto Parts On Your Own Vehicle

Are you one of those people who is mechanically inclined? If so, congratulations, while I can do simple auto repair I prefer not to especially with the way cars these days are getting more and more complicated. Still, if you enjoy it and you want to save some money, you can save quite a bit by finding the parts you need and installing them yourself. One way that you can reduce the expense of auto parts is to go for recycled car parts.

You will find that companies that specialize in recycling auto parts can offer you some really good savings. When you first thing of recyclers you may think that they are probably rare but the truth is there are a lot of companies that offer this service. The parts they have are in most cases just as good as new and you will pay a fraction of the price. One of the ways that they get the cars is from insurance companies that drop off cars that have been deemed to be totaled which the recyclers use the parts from.

You are also helping the environment by buying recycled parts because there is a good bit of pollution caused by making new parts due to the fact that they use a lot of oil to make new parts. As with many other things that we use as humans, reusing raw materials like this is very beneficial to our environment. There are well over four million vehicles recycled annually in the United States so that should tell you that there are lot of parts available out there for a wide range of vehicles. The act of recycling also saves and helps the environment by not filling unnecessary space in landfills. There is simply no reason to toss something out that can still be used. You are also able to get the same quality parts by using a recycler as you would get from the original manufacturer’s parts.

Recycled parts have so many benefits, from being environmentally conscious to saving you lots of money this is one of the best possible ways to buy auto parts. If you are concerned about the quality of the recycled auto parts you should know that most of the recyclers give warranties on the parts they sell so you do not have to be worried about whether they are good or not. They also usually have huge networks of other recyclers and parts dealers and can find the part you need quickly, efficiently, and at a good price.

How To Find The Automotive Body Parts You Need

If you have ever had to look for body parts for a vehicle you know what a pain it can be. There is such a wide array of different choices for the parts that it can really be confusing. There are aftermarket body parts that are more on the low end and then there are others that are more expensive so the prices can vary wildly. If you go with original manufacturer equipment you can expect to pay a great deal more than if you go with an aftermarket company that has similar if not equal quality. You also have the choice of going with used body parts which may come off of a junk car which will be cheaper still. Virtually any body part you need can be found from lights and grills to quarter panels and entire truck beds. So the key is to do your research and educate yourself so that you know what is available to you.

If you are a professional auto body person then I don’t have to go into the details for you of how valuable a good salvage yard can be. You can find a vehicle that may have damage to one side and the rest of the car is fine, or you may need the front clip are able to get it from a car that the rear end has been totaled on. If you own a late model car you can be sure to find just about any part you need and there will more than likely be several models of your car at a bigger salvage yard. The real defining factor of whether you are able to find quality parts at a salvage yard is probably geographical. For instance if you live up north where they use salt on the roads you may find it difficult to find parts that haven’t already began to corrode. If you live in a desert area such as New Mexico or Arizona there will be no problem finding parts at all.

Another idea for you is to buy cars with salvage titles. You can get them extremely cheap and then you have all the parts you need, once you have all you need you can part out the rest. If you have time on your hands this can be a good option and it allows you to bypass the middleman. Vehicles like these sell for only a fraction of what their real value is and as I said when you are done you can part them out or just scrap them.

Lastly you also have the aftermarket industry that specializes in automotive body parts. They have parts available for just about any car you can imagine. Many of these companies have taken the original parts and made molds that they use to create their own so there is no difference in appearance you just need to check them out and be sure that they are known for quality parts.
