Known as Southgate, the land is a prime bird and sea turtle nesting habitat.The sea turtles are endangered and the locals welcome this protection for them. Here at Southgate 96 different bird species have been sited, 26 of which are either endangered or at least threatened.

Some other group tasked with the preservation of natural wildlife and the Caribbean culture is the membership of the Hawksbill Sea Turtle Research Program of Buck Island Reef.Its study of the environmental sciences of the communities on the island includes the study of the survival of the endangered sea turtle. The study has been ongoing since 1988, and looks at the way the sea turtle migrate after their nesting season. These volunteer community members and noted scientists and researchers are working to develop a method of determining the gender of each sea turtle hatchling without threaten its survival.
