Atkinson while writing about the law of attraction states that the human mind is often affected by thoughts of failure. This often leads to restlessness and deflection from the path of progress. Atkinson states that law of attraction helps the mind in maintaining a mental calm and a state of steadiness in the face of adversity. He illustrates the point through the example of pouring oil from a vessel into troubled sea.

Atkinson suggests that the followers of the law of attraction should refrain from negative thoughts and actions. He points out that negative thoughts lead to negative actions and therefore, render us with negative experiences. It also implies negative utilization of energy. This, according to Atkinson is a wrong application of the law of attraction. Rather, he suggests use of strong thinking and confidence to fend negative energy.

According to Atkinson, the individual must have faith in himself and in his actions to be successful in his mission. Transparency between thought and action is very essential. Mere belief and wishful thinking of ‘I can’ and therefore, ‘I will’ will only work when it is followed by ‘I do’.

Before the beginning of the 20th Century little had been written about calligraphy except The Story of the Alphabet by Edward Clodd and Maude Thompson’s fine work on Greek and Latin Paleography together with his volume on English Illuminated Manuscripts, published in 1895 and out of print before 1906. But since the time that Edward Johnston published his book on Writing, Lettering and Illuminating a steady stream of works upon all aspects of the subject have been written; probably it was because of the interest aroused by the pioneers in the practical side of the craft that this flow of literature occurred, both here and in the United States.

The following are among the most important. The British Museum published a guide to the collection of manuscripts they had in 1906. About the same time John W. Bradley was publishing illustrated books on illuminating, its history and development. During 1907 the British Museum published Reproductions of Illuminated MSS., a series of fifty collotype plates. In 1920 W. A. Mason published in New York a work of considerable scholarship dealing with the subject of picture writing in the Americas together with the growth of letter-form in Egypt, Phoenicia, Babylon, Assyria, Crete, Greece and Rome, a book of great interest to all who wish to study the formation of alphabets.

With the development of photography and process reproduction the range of examples showing epigraphy and paleography has increased to a degree unthought of during the early days of the century. During 1932 B. L. Ullnan of the University of Chicago published Ancient Writing and Its Influence, which brings the history of the alphabet more up to date and includes some observations on the Sinai stones, which may eventually help to solve the riddle of the alphabet. Professor E. A. Lowe of Oxford wrote in The Legacy of the Middle Ages a chapter on “Handwriting” which deals with its growth before the time of Charlemagne. This is an excellent essay, which should be known by all serious students of calligraphy. James Wardrop of the Victoria and Albert Museum has also written on “Palatino and His Circle” in Signature, No. 14, 1952.

World origins and development of alphabets are also dealt with in great profusion by D. Diringer, a scholar in these matters. The French just before the war of 1939-1945 issued some newly discovered material in plates dealing with early specimens of the written small letter under the title of L’ Eicriture Latine by J. Mallon, which takes history back earlier than Maude Thompson’s great work.

Finally among the smaller and more recent publications comes the “King Penguin” on the subject of writing by Alfred Fairbank, which makes a rapid survey from the fourth to the twentieth centuries; and some beautiful photographic reproductions of the detailed work of twelfth-century artists taken from the Winchester Bible by Walter Oakshott.

From about the year 1930 writing and lettering had made such progress that it had become a subject in the training of Art Teachers and was taught by the immediate followers of the two who had given their lives to its cause. Lettering of Today, first volume, published in 1937, showed the work of some of these who had taken up the craft and were in their turn passing it on to the new generation.

As the art itself has progressed, so has the literature representing calligraphy. The aforementioned books are great historical references, but technical books that will walk you through the art of calligraphy are also available.

I don’t know about you, but magazines seem to mark a new level of development in my life. A few years ago I would go and buy the latest computer gaming magazine. I could always get a CD with the latest demo of the “cool” games and give them a try. Plus you had the latest commentary on what was happening. What games was coming out, cheats, and guides to not only beat the game, but find all the hidden secrets.

Then I pulled away from the computer games and found myself loving spy novels and fictional books about world politics. So I took the next best step and started reading the news magazines. Rarely would a week go by when I would not go and buy the latest issue of Times or Newsweek. I had to keep myself up-to-date on current affairs of the country and world, because you never know what is really going on, or so I thought.

Over time though I found I was gaining some weight. Ouch, that was a sad moment for me. So I need to start exercising, so of course, where is the next place I go for support and ideas, magazines? Where else can I find the next big tips about how to lose weight, build muscle, and look great. Inside I would find new exercises and techniques put forth by professionals who knew what they were doing. One of the things I love to discover is different versions of a particular science fiction story. It’s fascinating seeing how a short story can transition into a novel or a movie. But my own favorites are the novels.

Two of the best-known stories that went from great short story to brilliant novel are Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game. Both were excellent stories in each instance.

The fascination comes in being able to see how the short story brings out the situation quickly, then resolves it, while the novel brings out the details, information and characters that bring the surrounding story to life.

Take Ender’s Game, for example. The short story is about a young boy who goes to Battle School, and saves the world from alien invasion without knowing it. The novel gets into how he gets into Battle School, more of his training, and what his family is doing. Much more depth, and not only did this make sequels possible, it allowed for more novels focused on one of the other children from Battle School. All well done.

It’s similar for Nightfall. A world with five suns that has never known night… except once every couple thousand years. The inhabitants don’t believe in night, save for a few religious crackpots, but scientists are discovering evidence that something indeed happens. The novel goes into further detail as to the discoveries as well as the aftermath, when much of the world has gone insane from the unfamiliar darkness.

But I also enjoy finding stories that aren’t so well known. Eric Frank Russell’s Plus X and variants thereof, for example. This is an interesting case because I like the shortest version best. EFR’s strength was definitely in shorter stories. His works are hard to find, appearing rarely in bookstores, but what booklover minds an excuse to haunt the local used bookstore?

I like best finding books that were made into movies, not movies made into books. It’s just interesting seeing where the movie had to make changes to how things went in the book, while a book can stay more true to a movie.

Dune is a prime example. The novel is great. The movie… depends on which one you like best. Some prefer David Lynch’s version, others the miniseries that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. You can read reviews on each and get extremely different opinions.

I love it when I discover a new way to experience a story I’ve enjoyed, whether it be an older version or newer. There’s just something about it.
