Watching Your Cash Rewards

It feels great when you get money back from using your credit cards. It gives you a reason to use them and you feel as though you are benefitting from shopping as you would anyhow.

Is that really a good thing? Perhaps, perhaps not. That depends on you.

Cash rewards credit cards pay you back a percentage of what you spend on them. Basic purchases generally have up to 1% cash back, while other purchases may get 5% or more back, depending on the terms of the card.

If you use your credit card a lot, this can add up pretty nicely. But that does not mean it’s worth it.

Why Not?

The first reason cash rewards may not be worth it for you is if the card charges an annual fee. Effectively, this takes back some of the cash rewards you would otherwise be getting. A high annual fee is rarely worth it, especially if you only use your credit card minimally.

The second reason is that the interest rate you get is generally higher than you would be paying on a plain credit card, often by several percent. This doesn’t really matter if you are not carrying a balance, but if you do carry a balance it can be a big deal.

What About When It Is Worth It?

If a cash rewards credit card is right for you and your spending habits there are a few things you want to look out for, beyond the interest rate and/or annual fees.

The first is what it takes to get the best rewards. That “up to” 1% for most purchases - how do you get there? Is it within the range you are likely to spend?

You will also know what maxes out your rewards. Some cards only allow you to get a certain amount of rebate back each year. You want to get your rewards for all your purchases, so make sure you pick a card that will give them to you.

When you are thinking about applying for a card, compare the various benefits of each. This will help you to decide which has the benefits that are right for you. What appears to be the best card at first glance may not best suit you when you look more carefully. That little bit of extra time spent choosing can save you money and allow you to earn more rewards. It is very much worth it.

Does Divorce and Depression Go Hand in Hand

The stereotype that a man relishes trading his wife for a fast car or a younger woman has proven to be erroneous. In actual fact a new study has found that men appear to take separation much harder than women and divorce and depression seem to have a relationship in both men and women.

Both men and women have a higher risk of being depressed when they get divorced as compared to people who remain with their spouses, but men who are divorced or separated are six times more likely to report depression compared with men who remained married, while women are 3.5 times more likely to have bouts of depression than their counterparts who are still in relationships.

Michelle Rotermann, the author of the study, said she was surprised and also not surprised by the results. “On the one hand we know depression in general tends to be more common among women, but there is also a lot of evidence that shows that men have fewer social supports, and social supports do play an important part in the healing process”.

There are other factors that accompany the end of a relationship that may also contribute to the experience of depression, such as life style changes, economic difficulties or changes in the number of children living in the home. The study did find however that such changes were not enough to account for depression levels, which remained higher even after the other possible factors were taken into consideration. The dissolution of the relationship remained the highest factor causing depression.

Depression enters quietly, grabs a firm hold, and changes the way we live our lives. A dark cloud of grief and obscurity settles in robbing us of all our joys, and life seems to have lost its meaning. Depression comes in the form of painful crisis when it comes to divorce and loss of your partner. Many feelings like grief, rejection, anger, hatred, pain, feeling of being left behind, loneliness and above all a broken heart can destabilize you completely. There is nothing that can quickly take your pain away. One has to work through to come out of this pain and bring about the real healing.

Getting a divorce causes grief very much like the grief experienced when a loved one dies. The emotions are similar and follow a like pattern including the associated depression. The best news is that depression can be cured. Discuss your divorce and depression with your doctor and together you can find the best treatment options.

Consumers Face ‘Unbearable’ Debt Problems

A number of Britons report that their debt problems are causing them difficulties in other areas of their life, according to a new study.

In research carried out by R3 - the Association of Business Recovery Professionals - one out of six consumers are said to be unable to manage with repayments on secured loans and credit cards. Of those struggling the most with their day-to-day finances, 21 per cent of respondents were reported to have encountered debt problems as a result of becoming ill, with a third (33 per cent) highlighting redundancy as the source of their monetary difficulties.

The study also indicated that more than half of 18 to 24-year-olds are servicing student debt repayments, with this proportion falling to one in three of 25 to 34-year-olds still paying off money owed from their time in higher education. Meanwhile, the majority of respondents claim that increasing availability of credit, overspending and a “buy now” desire to make major purchases such as cars and foreign holidays were said to be the driving factors behind the “meteoric rise” in Britain’s debt management problems.

Commenting on the index, R3 president and insolvency lawyer Patricia Godfrey said: “Our members see the misery that high levels of debt can cause, as it is our insolvency practitioners who pick up the pieces when the debt becomes unbearable. What we will be producing here is a barometer of the increasing indebtedness across Britain. It will provide us with an important insight into the underlying causes of the burden of debt and changing attitudes towards it”.

The study forms part of a national YouGov survey, sponsored by R3, examining Britons’ attitudes to borrowing. Every three months members of the public will be questioned about levels of personal debt, in addition to money owed via secured loans. How much credit consumers are in will then be weighed against the average personal income.

Previous research by R3 recently indicated that borrowers in the north-west of England could have the highest debt difficulties in the country. The news comes after some 10,161 consumers in the region went bankrupt over the 12 months leading up to March as they struggled to handle their finances and pay off personal loans - a rate of about 30 people per day. Meanwhile, the south-west was said to have come a “close second” in terms of developing unmanageable financial problems, with London residents (7,209) reported to have the lowest insolvency problems.

Ms Godfrey claimed that as the number of those filing for bankruptcy reached a record high last year more Britons could be set to struggle with their finances as the “use of credit continues to rise” and the Bank of England increases interest rates. She added that as consumers continue to feel the impact of rising house prices and a surge in the general cost of living, those who are themselves unable to meet their credit commitments are advised to seek professional advice as soon as possible. “These situations are manageable if the debtor doesn’t stick his or her head in the sand and deals with it head on”, the president added.

Methods For Effective Offsite Search Engine Optimization

Off-site search engine optimization is a very debated issue. People everywhere argue relentlessly about the right and wrongs of running a good off-site SEO campaign. The truth is that running there isn’t as much to debate as everyone thinks.

Off-site SEO is simply about getting sites to link to your site. All major search engines use links to determine how important your pages are and getting links from other sites is likely the most important thing you can do with your time.

Getting links from other sites is as difficult as you make it. There are multiple methods that are available, and I will outline some of them for you with the remainder of this article.

Blogging creates links naturally. If you use any of the mainstream blog platforms, they will alert blog search engines when you publish an entry. If you don’t use a blog platform you can let the blog search engines know manually by pinging each. As bloggers read your blog they will naturally link to information they like.

WordPress blogs are automatically configured to ping blog search engines, so if you don’t have a blog set up yet, do yourself a favor and go with WordPress.

Another easy and interesting method for getting links to your site is by writing articles. There is and will always be a huge need for information on the internet, and there are hundreds of sites where you can have your articles published. Most sites will allow you to give yourself credit at the bottom with a nice link.

Doing a quick search in Google for ‘article directories’ will make it easy to find plenty of sites to have your article published on. Submitting an article takes about 5 minutes which is a pretty cheap link.

Many webmasters exchange links in order to get more links from other sites. This practice is called reciprocal linking and is still used quite a bit, although it isn’t as effective as it used to be. While doing a reciprocal link exchange, you agree to link to a site in exchange for the site linking to you.

One of the main benefits of doing a reciprocal link campaign is that you normally get to choose the exact anchor text that you want to use. Getting anchor text with the keywords you’re trying to target will go a long way towards getting ranked well for those keywords in search engines.

Forum marketing is also a very common method for getting links. Many forums will allow you to place a link to your site in your forum signature. You can often use whatever anchor text you want, so this method can be quite effective.

If you have a site, make sure that you’re working on off-site optimization for search engines. If you don’t, you’ll never reach the top!

Learn German Online

Learning a new language is often considered a costly task and people spend tons of money on buying books, courses, taking daily German lessons or paying for audio tapes, video lessons and so forth. Now, there’s an alternative to all of this: free language lessons online.

Not all languages can be learnt online. It depends on what you’re trying to learn and what your mother tongue is or what other languages you’re already familiar with. For example, learning Chinese online won’t be as easy as learning German through the same methods. Chinese requires more careful assimilation of grammar rules, vocabulary and learning steps whereas German can be learn more “freely” (and I’m not talking just about the financial costs). If you’re reading this, you’re either at least moderately familiar with English, or English is your mother tongue and this is a good starting point to learn German online, since there are a lot of connections that can be made between the two languages.

With German becoming an increasingly important language on the international stage, more and more people leave their course books behind and seek out websites that can offer free language lessons online. They’re faster, more convenient, you can go through them from the comfort of your own home and most importantly, they are much easier to assimilate, since an online lesson, unlike a course book for example, can combine visual and audio elements to make your learning process faster. In the past, this was not possible as websites were pretty blunt back then, they were just “clones” of course books with text, text and more text.

With the increased interactivity offered by many language learning sites out there, you can take online quizzes, play language games on the Internet, or on some sites, take audio/video lessons like you would from an audio or video tape. Forget about wasting time going to your local store, buying the tape, buying a good stereo and a set of headphones - now you have all these bundled up for free on the Internet. Technology is a blast, isn’t it?

Many websites (such as Internet Polyglot for example) offer a wide variety of methods to learn German, ranging from standard basic-to-advanced lessons, to word memorization games, text-video quizzes (like the ones that have you attach a specific word to a specific image - sort of like an interactive flashcard game) and so forth. Using games to increase German vocabulary or strengthen your grammar rules is also a solid option. Although many consider these games “childish”, they’re actually quite important and efficient, since you’re learning while having fun and we all know that this is a major boost to assimilating new words naturally.

One good tip would be to try and find quizzes and games that don’t simply use words. Sure, you can easily memorize a few words each day, but they won’t be “printed” in your memory as strongly as if you would have something visual attached to them. Our brain holds visual images much longer in our memory than simple strings of characters and words, so it’s a good idea to associate a picture to each word. When learning German, it’s even easier to do this since German has a lot of cognates with English (words that look or sound alike in the two languages and that share a common meaning) so you can stamp the English word instead of a visual image to the new word.

However, watch out for false cognates as they can be quite misleading. False cognates are words that sound or look alike in both languages, but their meaning is completely different, so if you don’t learn to spot them, you could be using words in completely inappropriate contexts. Fortunately, the list of false cognates is not that high between English and German, but it’s still a good idea to learn these exceptions by hard.

I’ll leave it to you to find the right websites for learning German online, but know that you shouldn’t just settle for the first one you find. Try learning from two sources and go through several websites before settling in on these two. In most cases, this will offer you a more complete coverage of the German language.

Increase your German language vocabulary at German lessons at Internet Polyglot by playing online games.

Discover A Secret More Effective Method Than Goal Setting

Traditional goal setting does not work as effectively as most ‘experts’ would have you believe.

This is because there is one factor, one key, a missing link, which, without it, you’d simply have no motivation to go about doing the things you are supposed to do to bring about the achievement of your goal.

And that is the big picture. What do I mean by the big picture?

The big picture is like a vision. It’s an obsession. A passion. A dream. A big, grand, bold dream that you have for your life.

In other words, it is a purpose. A life purpose.

I know these may all sound like big words to you, but the point here is for you to have an ultimate purpose for all your goals in life. What most people have are goals for material objects or for career advancements or monetary gains.

Most people, and I didn’t say all, merely stop at these ‘bite-sized pieces’, these small goals when it comes to goal setting. They don’t continue on to think about why they set these goals and for what even bigger purpose do they set these goals.

Ask yourselves - why do I want this new Mercedes? Why do I want this big mansion? Why do I want to earn an extra $100,000 a year? Why do I want to have so and so person as my spouse? Why?

Keep asking why. And again, most people would realise that it comes down to a feeling or sense of fulfilment, happiness, of being loved, of being secure and safe, or of being free. Some people would just say, “I just want these things”.

Well, all that may sound good and fine but do you truly think that once you get that Mercedes or that big mansion or the extra $100,000 a year or that person as your spouse, you’d be truly happy, fulfilled, free, secure and alive?

Try and look back at one past goal which you have achieved. Take a look at one milestone which you’ve already gone through. Do you find yourself something saying something like, “And now what”?

Most of us do. That’s because we don’t have that biggest, ultimate, most grand purpose for our lives. The reason why we are born. Some people call it destiny, or phrase it as “God’s place for you in the world”. Whatever it is, don’t think of it as something beyond your power.

This thing called purpose or the big picture is a thing that is both within your power to choose and also outside your power to choose. It is the sum total of all your life choices from the day you were born up to this very day.

The proof that it is within your power to choose is the fact that you’d been making all the choices and decisions in your life all this while, asking for this and that, regardless of whether or not you get what you asked for, to build up an image, a vision or The Big Picture of your life, which is your ultimate life purpose - that reason you were born and the thing that you must fulfill in your life before you die.

Whereas the proof that it is also beyond your power to choose is the fact that you already have made all those choices before in your past and there is little or nothing you can do to alter those choices you’ve made in the past. There are some decisions we made which we can undo, but not without a significant amount of trouble, and there are many decisions we simply cannot undo.

This is the irony of human life and why it is beautiful to be human.

But if you are sitting right there where you are, reading this post, you still have hope. You do still have a chance. Create for yourself a grand vision of your life - why you are here on this earth. Conceive big, bold dreams.

Imagine you are a historian or a scholar studying the history of your life. What would you like to be remembered for? What would you like to be famous for? What would you like to be associated with whenever your name is mentioned?

Write an essay about yourself, as if you were a historian in the future, looking back into your life. Include all the glorious things you have achieved, and even the flaws, the mistakes and huge failures you’ve made. But also include how you’ve transcended these flaws, mistakes and failures. Write about the difference you’ve made to the world, no matter how small (or big) it is.

Have you left behind a wonderful family? Have you left behind a legacy? Have you left behind a successful business? Or simply a happy memory in the mind of a person you’ve helped in a small or big way?

Now, after you’ve done this exercise, you may proceed with your traditional goal setting methods. Create sub-goals out of this big goal of your life. Create the secondary goals to this primary goal. Set the milestone goals that would define your ultimate life purpose.

What this does to you is create a certain insurance or feeling of security, because, although you may fail to achieve your small goals (no matter how bold they seem to be), you’re still on track because you have not lost sight of your ultimate life goal.
