To help ease your burden in shopping for hunting equipment, this article gives you 3 pointers you should remember. They are : where to buy your stuffs, where to get advice and opnions, what to buy for your best friend - your hunting dog!

1) Where should you buy your hunting equipment and such?

Should you buy your hunting gear at a department store or a sporting goods store? In a specalist, outdoor sporting goods store, you can find a greater variety and quality of items not found anywhere else. But these tend to be more expensive so it is most suitable for those with big budgets.

The sporting good section of a department store, on the other hand, offers a general selection of items at more affordable prices. Department store are great for those on a tight budget. The downside is that you may not find the specialized or high quality equipment you want.

Therefore it is best to shop for your gear at both types of stores, keeping in mind the cost savings offered by the department stores.

2) Where do you find advice on what and where to buy hunting stuffs?

With so many brands on the market, choosing a piece of hunting equipment is like choosing a new TV or coffeemaker. You just don’t know which one is the real Mcoy! Luckily, there is the internet and you can easily find a website which offers opinions and reviews of certain hunting product or equipment.

There are also forums where hunters share your experiences, tips and secrets too. The honest and open opinions of other hunters can help to narrow down the available choices and make your shopping a little easier. Simply do a search on Google for hunting reviews or forums and you should be able to find some good ones.

You are most likely not hunting alone. Your best friend will likely tag along and I’m not talking about the human kind. He is your favorite hunting dog. There is hunting equipment made just for hunting dogs, for example, a blaze orange hunting vest can keep Bingo safe when flushing out pheasants in the field. Doggy booties can help keep the pads of his feet from getting frostbite on those cold, cold, wintry hunts.

Another important piece of gear for the hunter is a canine first aid kit. Accidents can happen for a dog during hunting just as it can happen for a hunter. Nothing is worse than having one’s best hunting buddy injured and you have no way to help him! Many of these dog first aid kits come complete with not only first aid items but booklets that show how to effectively deal with different types of injuries.

So there you have it. Remember these 3 points when you go shopping for your hunting gears. They could save you a ton of headaches later.

Deer Hunting Tips For Your Hunt

I still remember the first time I went deer hunting with my grandpa and dad. I was 18 years old and hunting for whitetail deer. It was thrilling and one of the best times of my life! No, I did not bag a large buck or come home with any antlers to hang on the wall that day, but I did come home with a new passion, deer hunting!

Since that very first trip, I have read a lot of tips and techniques, bought the right hunting apparel, shopped endlessly for hunting gear and tried to learn from the more experienced and successful deer hunters. Throughout the years, people have asked me for hunting tips from beginning hunters and have come up with a few guidelines that I usually follow and give out as advice.

The first thing worth mentioning is to know a little about the kind of deer you are hunting before you set out. One of the most popular hunting sports in the United States is whitetail deer hunting and a good species to start with. The whitetail deer is one of the most common species of deer in the United States and you can easily recognize them by their small, short ears and long white tail that sticks up. Bucks in this species have antlers with all major points coming off the main beam and weigh on average about 60-160 lbs. It is easy to distinguish the females apart from the males because they are smaller and do not have antlers.

You will find this species in southern hardwood states and in large quantities in Texas. You might also find that you enjoy hunting the whitetail more than other species because they tend to only roam a small range, making it possible for you to have a great hunt in a concentrated area.

Another very common species that I enjoy hunting is the mule deer. You can find these deer in western Canada and in the western United States as far East as Texas and Wisconsin. This species is bigger than the whitetail and will give you more meat per catch. When hunting the mule deer, you will have better success in the high mountains and at the forests edge because they are not deep forest dwellers. You can also easily distinguish between the mule deer species from the whitetail because of the long mule-like ears and gray color of the mule deer.

If you are looking for a challenging hunt, this is your species. Unlike the whitetail, which tends to stick close to one area making them easier targets, the mule deer tend to roam over wider areas and blend in more with their surroundings due to their gray colored hides.

When deer hunting, you should also remember and practice the basics of good hunting, have the right hunting equipment and make sure you are not missing any vital pieces in your hunting gear before getting into position. Be prepared to start early in the morning and be up and in your position or deer stand before sunrise. Some of the best times to bag a deer are as the sun comes up or in the evening when it is setting.

Avoid any strong scents such as cologne, or strong deodorants as the deer have very heightened senses of smell and are easily spooked by human scents. Lastly, and maybe the most important tip I can give you and one that has unfortunately cost me a great buck or two, is to keep silent. Silence is very important and I have found that even a faint whisper can scare a deer off.

By knowing your species characteristics and habitat and by following good hunting basics, your hunting trips will begin on the right foot and might possibly even bag you that great catch all of us are looking for when deer hunting!

Why Your Camouflaged Hunting Clothes Are Crucial For Your Hunting Success

As a successful hunter, one of your most important belongings is your camouflaged (camo) hunting clothes. This may seem odd to you but camouflage hunting clothes actually play a crucial role in a successful hunt. This article explains why camo hunting clothes may make or break your hunting trip and how you should take care of them.

Ever noticed how animals are naturally blended into their environment? Take the tiger, one of the most powerful predators on earth. The tiger’s stripes blend with their jungle surrouding, giving them a natural camouflage. Camouflaging is vital because it breaks your outline and make you less visible to your prey (or predator as the case may be) - you can say it is “hiding in plain sight”.

It is the same with the hunter. Camo clothings are made to simulate the various surroundings that a hunter hunts in, from dense underbrush to wetland grass. Camouflaging effectively breaks the out-line of the hunter in the wild. But note that this solves only part of the problem for the hunter because some animals can still sense their predators by movement. Therefore, combining stealthy movement with camouflaging is a valuable skill for a hunter to have.

The reason why companies spend an enormous amount of time and energy creating and selling realistic camouflaged hunting attire is that these are in big demand by hunters in the know. Whether one hunts elks or bears, there is a pattern available in a number of different clothing options.

So before you go hunting, make sure you get the right camo hunting clothes. If you are intending to go duck hunting, don’t go and buy a set of camo clothes for deer hunting. You may just give yourself away even before the fun starts!

The are also shirts and pants of all cuts and styles available, not to mention hats, gloves, coats, shoes, coveralls and hunting accessories with matching camouflage patterns too. You can try these if it fits your budget but they are probably not as important as your camouflaged hunting clothes.

But how do you care for your precious camouflaged hunting clothes so as to prolong their usage in the field? There are 2 points you need to remember and do :-

1) You should wash your camo hunting clothings in scentless soap with no UV brighteners. UV wavelengths caused by dyes in certain fabrics can make a camouflage pattern more visible to game. Some special detergents made for hunting clothes ensure that these UV wavelengths will be absorbed rather that bounce off in a manner visible to certain types of game. These detergents are also made to prevent fading so your camo hunting clothes can last longer in the field.

2) You should also store your hunting camouflaged hunting clothes in airtight bags so as to keep them free from man made odors. This is important because some preys have strong sense of smell and can detect a human from far away.

So that’s it. Make sure that you shop for the right camo hunting attire before you go hunting the next time. And remember the above 2 points in caring for them too.

Hunting Equipment for the Novice & Experienced Hunter

When embarking on the sport of hunting it doesn’t take long for one to become very familiar with the necessary and required hunting equipment. Depending on the type of hunt, clothing, decoys, calls and ammunition can all differ. Aside from the basics, some people will swear that a particular piece of equipment is crucial to a hunt.

Others might not ever use that piece of equipment. It is not uncommon for a hunter to devise his or her own personalized hunting gear over a period of time. This allows a person to hunt with confidence, security and a feeling of stability.

The debate between whether to buy gear at a department store or at a sporting goods store continues to be a center of controversy. If a store specializes in outdoor sporting goods you will usually find a larger assortment and quality of items not found anywhere else. The sporting good section of a department store will offer a general selection of items that are much more affordable.

If you are hunting on a budget department store prices are usually your best option. This is especially true when the same item found in the specialty store can be found for considerably less at the department store. It is often necessary to make the purchase from a specialty store for high quality equipment or specialty items. But you most likely will not be able to find it anywhere else.

While some companies only make one type of hunting equipment or only one line item, there are other companies who create numerous lines of gear. Many offer items from clothing to tree stands. Deciding on a piece of equipment can be much like choosing a new TV or coffeemaker. There are so many different types and brands, it can sometimes be overwhelming when making the right choice.

Fortunately, one of the most valuable tools available for hunters are hunting equipment reviews. Websites dedicated to hunting oftentimes have areas where one can solicit the opinion of other hunters that are familiar with a certain products or pieces of equipment. The honest and open opinions of these individuals can help to narrow down the available choices.

Hunting equipment is not only for hunters. There is also a wide variety of equipment made just for hunting dogs. A blaze orange hunting vest can keep your dog safe when flushing pheasants in the field. In addition, dog booties can help keep the his feet from getting frostbite on those wintry hunts.

One important piece of hunting equipment to have is a canine first aid kit. Accidents can happen for a dog during hunting just as easily as it can for a hunter. There is nothing worse than having one’s best hunting buddy injured and not have a way to help him when this happens. Be sure to buy a kit that come completes with not only first aid items as well as booklets that show how to deal with different types of injuries.

Great Elk Hunting in New Mexico

Truly one of the best experiences I have had in my lifetime was the elk hunting trip I took last season with my two friends. Before actually taking time off work, we planned the trip for months, down to the smallest detail, to ensure that we would have the best time possible. Our biggest question in the beginning was where to go. With all the great locations around the country and many states offering excellent hunting grounds and services, it was a little tough deciding.

After many debates, we finally decided on the state of New Mexico. Once the major decision of location was out of the way we then turned our attention to buying the appropriate hunting gear, selecting the hunting equipment we would be using and educating ourselves since this was our first hunt. Since coming back from our adventure, I have been shared with friends many times about planning elk hunting trips and hope that you also find these tips helpful in planning your own trips.

The first aspect worth mentioning in planning a trip is that its a good idea to start with location. New Mexico is an excellent choice and has actually boosted its economy through big game hunts and is now in the lead over other states. Because of its strict conservation methods and excellent hunting grounds, the elk population is plentiful making a successful hunt very likely.

You will especially enjoy your time in New Mexico if you want to be in close contact with the elk while enjoying a variety of gorgeous scenery and terrain. I recommend that you research the best hunting states and what they have to offer and determine what is right for you.

No matter what state you choose, there are a wide variety of companies known as outfitters, that offer their services as guides in elk hunting. I would personally recommend using a guide through one of the many outfitters if you are not a seasoned hunter. The guides in these agencies know the terrain well and are able to assess your skill level, allowing for a challenging hunt without it being too difficult.

Each outfitter is different but some offer great amenities including, showers, meals, licenses and hunting equipment and usually work hard to provide great service so you will want to use them again in the future.

Another important thing you want to make sure and do before your trip is to educate yourself about the animal itself. Elk hunting is known to be a test of skill whether it is with a bow, muzzle loader or rifle. Elk are among the most cunning of animals and have a very acute sense of danger. It is very possible for you to be right in front of a large bull weighing 700-800 lbs, only to be fooled by its hasty escape. This challenge is probably what you will find most exciting about the hunt whether you end up bagging a large bull or not. You should also read up on bugling.

Bugling instruments are made to mimic the sounds of bulls or cows and draw them into range. You definitely want to choose a quality piece to add to your hunting equipment since it can determine the outcome of your hunt by bringing the animals to you or scaring them off.

By adequately preparing for your trip, educating yourself and having the right hunting gear you will definitely be on the right track for a successful hunt. Studying the behavior of elk and knowing how to bring them into range before hand might possibly even bag you that great catch all of us are looking for when elk hunting!

A Wildlife Experience While Hunting For Game

Every hunting season there is a flurry of activity in the forests. Some of the people in the Forestry and Conversation Service are readying signs and checking paths to make sure that hunters know where the boundary lines are to the places where they can hunt for game. The Forest Rangers are working throughout the year too, to stop poachers from taking game from the forest when they are not supposed to.

While the Forest Rangers are outside, they have the opportunity to experience the thrill of nature. The views from the rangers stations that are located deep in the forest are exquisite and the entire outdoor experience almost leaves them breathless and they never tire of the view at any time during the year.

From their perch high above the tree tops, they routinely see hawks, eagles and buzzards flying, and the free-flight freedom that each of these majestic creatures experiences in daily life will soon be interrupted by loud and ripping tones of gunfire. Hunting season serves a purpose but the Park Rangers always wish that there was some other alternative.

People come to the forests for many reasons. True, they come to hunt but they might hunt for wild berries or a field of wild flowers. They might search high and low until they find the waterfall with a beautiful pool that they came across unexpectedly while hiking through the forest. There are fond memories to be had in this forest, and some of the animals in it are part of those memories.

When families create campsites deep in the woods, they hope against hope that some deer will come traveling through. The families have different views of deer and think they are gorgeous, unlike the hunters who go hunting them during hunting season. Hunting is imposed on deer because there are so many, and many deer starve because the forest can not provide enough food for them to eat.

Deer rarely search for food around campsites because they have learned to fear humans. No doubt, there is probably plenty of food amongst the trees that surround the National Parks but deer choose to starve to death rather than approach an area where they know for sure that someone there will kill them.

Deer are only one of the animals in the forest that people hunt. Some prefer to go hunting for raccoons because they want their tail as an ornament for a hat. The opossum is really misunderstood around a campsite but down South hunters search for them for a stew that is quite delightful. Those critters are quire clever in the way they search for their food but hunters know their weakness and get them every time.

Choose the Right Bow For Bow Hunting

If you are thinking about getting into bow hunting, the first thing you’ll need to choose is a bow. Now, a gun hunter can waltz into a shop, spend a few hours feeling the weight of different pieces, assess them for weight and action and walk out of the shop with a new gun that suits their needs. Bow hunters don’t have it so easy. For starters, there are three kinds of bow on offer, the longbow, the re-curve and the compound bow. Arguably, the most popular bow used by modern hunters is the compound bow.

Once you’ve chosen a bow style, there are a number of other points to consider when choosing the bow that’s right for you, and it’s vital not to overlook any of them.

Consider the quality of the brand

Your bow will need to withstand a fair amount of abuse, ranging from inclement weather to the occasional drop from a tree stand. Seek out a bow that has a solid warranty, is made by a widely-known manufacturer and comes with recommendations from fellow hunters.

Assess the speed of the bow

For many experienced bow hunters, speed is the most important quality a bow offers. The faster an arrow moves, the more distance your bow can cover. The flip side to this is that speed can also lead to a drop in accuracy, even for experienced archers.

Accuracy is key

Above all else, you need an accurate bow if you are going to succeed in hunting anything with it. It’s fair to say an accurate shot is just as much, if not more, down to the user’s experience as it is to the bow itself. The best bet is to find a bow that suits your style, and practice with it as much as practical.

A little thing called forgiveness

Bow hunters have a special name measuring the error in their grip and form plus the anchor and release of their bow - it’s known as forgiveness. Generally, the less experienced a hunter is, the higher their required degree of forgiveness will be. Generally, bows with a brace height near eight inches have more forgiveness than those with shorter brace heights. It’s important to understand the trade-off here as well, a larger brace height is often accompanied by a loss of speed.

Does it look the part?

At the end of the day, looks matter to most of us. Given the sheer variety of bows on the market, there’s bound to be one that you think is the absolute business and plenty of others that aren’t so attractive.

Weigh these characteristics up carefully as you research bows, whether that’s online or in person. And before ordering a bow from an online vendor, regardless of how well recommended they are, do yourself a favor and visit a local supplier to examine a similar unit in person. This will help you avoid disappointment, and ensure the bow suits your needs.

Duck Hunting Better Than Ever

I first fell in love with duck hunting years ago when I was a boy. My dad and I used to go out on trips together and come back with meat for my mom to make us a great dinner. Over the years, I have been very pleased to see the many improvements take place in the world of duck hunting because we did not have all the modern equipment and fancy gear that is available in stores today. The changes made in ammunition, clothing, boats, decoys and other hunting equipment have greatly improved and as a result has improved my hunting success as well.

I am often asked about the necessary hunting equipment and the best gear needed for duck hunting and I usually tell people to start with the basics and go from there. There are all kinds of accessories you can buy and products you can try but most of it is just a matter of what you like. There is basic equipment that you will want to have though right from the start, including duck blinds, guns and shooting supplies, camouflage clothing and duck callers. All of these items can easily be found in outdoor recreational stores although I usually prefer to buy my gear and accessories wholesale or in the off season in order to save a little money.

You can also save money buy doing this and will find it allows you to splurge on extra gear or try new products when they come out on the market. The most important thing you will want to remember though when buying equipment, is to choose quality products. You do not want an important piece of equipment to break on the hunt since it could be a matter of your personal safety or determine the outcome of your trip.

I always tell people that serious hunters know the importance of having the right equipment and know how to use it. Since the success of your hunt depends on the equipment you have, I recommend making a list of the items you need and familiarizing yourself with the gear before you head out. The major thing to remember is that ducks have excellent vision which is why it is necessary to use blinds to camouflage everything from your clothing to your equipment.

You can even find blinds for your dog that allows him to see out without being seen by the duck. Using camouflage definitely offers you the great advantage of unrestricted shooting angles and sight lines and you will be will pleased with the results it yields.

It is also a good idea to invest in a duck hunting boat or jon boat since marshes and swamps make great places to find ducks and you will have the most success hunting in these areas. I personally love being out on the boat because of the access to great hunting areas it gives me. The improvements made in duck boats over the years has also been significant just like in the rest of duck hunting gear. They are now made to overcome obstacles such as sand, mud, weeds, and logs that easily would have destroyed the boats from years ago. You will definitely benefit from having a duck boat and will enjoy the many features of modern boats now available including, gun storage boxes, ice chests and grab rails to name a few.

Remember, the success of your hunt depends greatly on the hunting gear that you have. Take time before hand to become familiar with all the duck hunting equipment available and you are bound to have a wonderful time while duck hunting.

Your Most Important Hunting Supplies

Three years ago, I had the opportunity to plan my family’s annual hunting trip which included choosing and buying all the hunting supplies we would need for our three days out.

Because my dad had always taken care of planning these trips, I greatly underestimated the many things we would need while in the wilderness and let’s just say we were missing a quite a few necessary items those three days.

I learned the hard way that first trip but since then have added many items to my hunting gear and have planned many successful trips with all the right supplies. When asked by friends to share my supply list and to help organize their own trips, one of the first pieces of advice I give them is to prepare the right hunting supplies, sufficient for the entire trip.

Not only does the success of your trip depend on what you have with you, but your safety also plays an important part in what you choose to take. Because your hunting supplies are such an important part of your trip, you will want to keep in mind that once in the wilderness, you will not be able to buy extra food or forgotten equipment.

Because of this, I always make sure that each individual of the hunting party has their own personal hunting gear before I move on to planning for the whole group. Each person in your party should have the appropriate hunting apparel and an odor eliminator to eliminate human scent in the wilderness.

It is also important for each individual to choose a sleeping bag appropriate for their body size and one that is comfortable. I have found it helpful to hand out a list of necessary items that each individual is responsible for bringing. By doing this, you will then easily be able to turn your attention to planning supplies for the group as a whole.

I have also learned that a big part of a successful trip is planning a sufficient amount of food, communal tools, cookware and first aid supplies for everyone in the group. Since a successful hunt usually lasts more than a day, you will want to make sure you have the appropriate camping gear for the time you will be away.

Making plans for the sleeping arrangements is also important. I like to have as many tents as I need in order for everyone to sleep comfortably. Unless you plan to camp in a very dry and safe area you will want to invest in a good tent or a few tents if your party is big.

Another indispensable item you must have is a utility knife! It was very useful for everything from cutting wood for a fire to skinning animals to eat and is one of the hunting supplies you do not want to forget!

You can easily find all of this hunting equipment and more in outdoor recreational stores. If you are on a budget though, you might find it beneficial to buy your hunting supplies wholesale.

Many of the products that are offered at wholesale prices are very good and are only sold at cheaper prices because they are not name brand or are out of season. Buying wholesale always saves me a lot of money and allows me to buy extra gear. The thing to remember though when buying wholesale is to research any questionable items and only buy quality.

It is better to pay a little more for items like tree stands and GPS equipment than to have such an important item break while you are out on the hunt. Of all the many things involved in planning a successful hunting trip, the most important thing to remember is to prepare adequately before hand and take enough necessary equipment and hunting supplies.

Targets Used In Hunting

Many hunters are skilled at hitting any type of target because they practiced hitting them when they were young. The materials for the targets might have changed but the hunters were happy nonetheless to have them. In groups of three or four, the neighborhood boys would hurry to meet in a pasture and have fun tying some red and white paper targets to the sides of some trees.

When each hunter in the group shot at their targets, they thought a lot about the animal they were pretending to hunt. They wanted to make the target center seem more real, and the group would yell quite loudly whenever one of the boys would hit their mark by putting a bullet in the center. If one hunter needed more instruction on hitting the center, there were always the other hunters in the group that could help them.

Over the years, the hunters came to the realization that it was not necessary for them to participate in any type of target practice. After giving it careful thought as they sat in a blind one day, they all decided that they actually had all the targets that they needed in the woods around them. The challenge of hitting those targets had not changed though.

One of the hunters still had trouble hitting a target while hunting in the woods. They justified their lack of accuracy to the fact that the targets they were hunting had the ability to move, bend and hide from the hunters and that the group never practiced hitting targets like that. There is always one in a group that does not do like they are told and this hunter never fantasized about the paper targets being as real as the one that would be hunted.

The only type of target that the group of hunters did not count on was the type of targets that were small and stood about a foot or more off the ground. Early on, they had visions that the game they were hunting were black bear and elk and some deer or a elk. They had never fantasized about putting a bullet through a turkey or any other fowl that ran on the ground.

These hunters sat in the blind over a weekend and talked their target strategies out. They decided the game that they preferred to hunt and the target areas on the body that would be hit. They talked about feathers and the talk slowed until the one who never listened asked if anyone had heard a sound.

Sure as you please, the hunters gazed through the blind and right outside was a turkey nesting just as pretty as you please. For the rest of the night the hunters talked softer and discussed who was going to carry the buzzard out of the woods after they decided that he would be killed at midnight in a target practice session that was shot in the dark.
