They also need to take specialized training in the rules of the sport at which they are performing to make sure they don’t violate any boundaries or interfere with play in any way. Mascots learn tricks, songs and ways to keep the audience interactive and happy. Many mascots get training through high school and college before they enter the professional arena. Some even start at minor-league games and are called up to the big leagues, just like baseball players. Mascots are the new vaudeville for our age.

A dangerous job

Any professional mascot will tell you doing pratfalls is not without pitfalls. There are dangers that can happen. The most common problem is severe dehydration from wearing a 20 to 30 pound costume in heat, humidity and for long periods of time. Mascots must take frequent breaks and continue to hydrate themselves in order to keep their physical health at a maximum.

Other dangers include angry or drunk fans, who sometimes push, kick or throw things at the mascot. Because baseball is a sport played with both endorphin and emotion sometimes even the athletes themselves can take out their frustration or anger on a mascot. It is against major-league baseball’s rules and can result in severe fines for anyone caught doing it. However mascots always need to be aware to keep their wits about them and be aware of their surroundings.

The rewards

People who choose to be professional mascots will tell you that even though it is physically hard and sometimes scary, there are great rewards along with the job. People like them better than clowns, and they get to make families and children laugh and smile. They also get to be a part of the sport they love. For people who didn’t have the physical power or skill to actually be involved in the sport, being a mascot helps them be part of the team and part of the franchise. It’s a fun way to make a living and satisfying to know you’ve given others a smile as your own dreams come true.

The next time you go to a major-league game don’t just pay attention to the runs, hits and errors. Be sure to give a little love to the hard working mascot too.

However in the light of allegations of the use of performance-enhancing drugs and various anecdotal evidence thereof, watching him tackle the record has become a painful and angering process. What does it matter how many home runs you hit if you have to have drugs in your system to make you more able to do it? Barry Bonds has categorically denied that he is ever used performance-enhancing drugs although many in baseball who have confessed to doing so had named him as a co-conspirator. Still he maintains that there is no proof and until there is, he is innocent. Unfortunately, while proof is the foundation of the justice system, common sense goes a long way. Barry Bond’s continuing appearance in the scandal shows him to be a tragic figure, doing what he should not be able to do in a way he should not be doing it.

The attitude

Barry Bonds is closing in on Hank Aaron’s record and the resulting scandal of possible performance-enhancing drug use have brought him some attention that he didn’t want. Frequently whenever he takes the field, he is booed, heckled and hissed. Some people boo because they feel he did cheat in pursuing this homerun record. Others, however, claim they boo because he is generally an unpleasant person. Baseball is and will always be about relationships with fans. Whether you like it or not, when you’re being paid $2.5 million a year they expect to be willing to shake their hand, to smile, and to treat them with general warmth and affection. Most baseball players manage to find a wonderful balance of creating a fan base built on genuine love for the game and finding private time where they can experience their full range of emotions. Bonds has no such desire or balance. His attitude towards fans is often described as hostile, mad or snarling. Even when he smiling for cameras there is a general fakeness to his pose that makes people believe he is not happy to be around anyone. Nobody questions Barry Bonds is a great baseball player. They do question if he is a good person.

The theft

The issue of taking Hank Aaron’s homerun crown creates ire in many fans in part because it is such a special memory. Anyone who was alive then and remembers the grainy images on television of number 755 coasting over the fence will tell you it is a treasured part of their recollection. For anyone to come near that number, and potentially eclipse it creates a certain amount of loss and grief in fans. Add to that the possibility of performance-enhancing drugs or steroid use, and the attitude of someone who seems less like a hometown hero and more like a big bully with a bat, and you see why they consider Aaron’s crown to be stolen from his head, rather than rightfully earned. This more than anything else, is what is created concern about Barry Bonds eventually taking over the record.

Historically, Barry Bonds will go down in baseball history as a tragic talent. His inability to overcome his self and his sins will forever tarnish his achievements and his hopes.

George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, is spot on by calling out his management team and players for their poor performance thus far this season. He’s also correct in pointing out that the season is still relatively young. There is still a lot of playing left for the boys of summer.

Perhaps understandably, many New York fans have started to demand the firing of team manager Joe Torre.

And then there are the fans who look to the field, and rightly or wrongly, declare that the Yankees simply don’t have enough pitching.

Much as in the business world, Steinbrenner is saying his sports team is directly responsible for the results on the field. And I would wager that the odds are high that if performance doesn’t improve substantially very soon, we are going to see a big change to the team’s future.

As Steinbrenner points out: “It is time to see if people are ready to step up and accept their responsibilities. Let’s get going.”

Another similarity between sports and business is that that managers tend to get too much credit when things are good and too much blame when they aren’t. They of course have a large roll to play; but they are not the only pieces of the puzzle.

Finally, my argument comes down to one point: it really is still a very young season. And that makes all the difference in the sports world.

So for all you New York Yankee fans out there, remember: it is much too early to panic. Although the Yankees are currently in last place, there is still more that 80 percent of the season left to be played. While the desire to pin the blame on someone is understandably quite high, keep in mind that decisions should be made on a rational, not emotional, basis. Athletes under thirteen tend to have a hard time settling down to one specific position. You will always have a weak link in the team.

When a team player is out sick , do you drag your son up to fill that position? Is he satisfied with you doing this ? Just because this is your son, don’t mean you should treat him like a guinea pig. Maybe some of the other players want to fill that empty position. Yes , experience helps out. If you’re steadily picking your son to fill the empty position , none of the other players are getting more experience in the empty positions. Treat the players fairly.

Nothing is more exciting than coaching your son. Making decisions to fill empty positions with other players isn’t easy either. Did anyone tell you the game was going to be easy? Remember your son looks at you as his father and coach. You should look at your son as a team player and your great son.

By the age fourteen, your son will develop a natural position. What about the other players on the team? Without experience , they will never hold a natural position.

With experience , the team can develop trust among themselves and learn that they can depend on each other. This will allow the team to see the game in a different and definitely a better way. Experience may force your son out of his natural position before his baseball career has started to another challenging position in baseball. Never tend to say never , because it will come back on you.

The MLB roster has forty active members. When spring training is completed, only 25 players will remain on the active roster. Minor league affiliates tend to reassign the remaining 15 players.

If a player is on the 40 roster and has at least three years of service as of November 20th he can be drafted by other teams . This is for a fee of $50,000. This prevents stockpiling of prospects by teams. Under Draft five the player must make an appearance on the twenty five player roster for the next playing season. If that player can remain on the twenty five roster he can be drafted back by his original team for a fee of $25,000.

There’s nothing quite like being part of Red Sox Nation, especially this season. So far this season, they are dominating their division. Rounding out the Red Sox starting pitches are Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield, and Julian Tavarez, each with strong performances this season. And Lester is due to come back to the rotation soon, which will only make the rotation even stronger.

They also have great relievers and closers as well. Hideki Okajima has excellent so far and has an Earned Run Average of only 1.27. Rounding out the bullpen are Jonathan Papelbon, Brendan Donnelly, J.C. Romero, and Joel Pineiro. The quality of the Red Sox pitching has made it very hard to score against them and has helped neutralize some of the strong offenses they have faced.

The have lost to the New York Yankees several times this season despite this being one of the worst seasons in recent Yankee history. The Sox really don’t have any superstars on the team. However, the are playing play excellent technical baseball and work well as a team. They are always doing what it takes to win and playing smart baseball.

The Boston Red Sox are a sure bet to win their division as they are leading the Blue Jays, Yankees, Orioles, and D-Rays by 10 games or more. However, they do have some competition in other MLB divisions. The Angels, Brewers, Dodgers, Padres, and Mets are all having great seasons as well and could pose a threat to the Red Sox in the post season. However, the Sox have one of the most solid and consistent teams in the MLB this year and they have a great chance of holding together all the way to October.

It’s true that the Sox have struggled so far this year with the Yankees and more recently, the Athletics, but by the end of the season, they will have an excellent chance of winning the AL Pennant. Look for them to be the team to beat in the post season.
