A couple of the most popular are expedia.com and kayak.com, with a staggering number of visitors every day. Don’t be fooled, though. Just going to one of these sites and checking their deals isn’t always the way to get the best airfare deal. In reality, they have to make money somehow, so their fares are marked up.

Certainly the prices will still be cheaper than regular fares, but you could possibly buy the same airfare for quite a few dollars less if you go directly to the airline website. Check the deal sites first, then see if you can do better on the airline’s site.

Personally, I visit the discount fare websites, pick out half a dozen really good fares that fit my travel plans, make a note of which airline they’re with, then go and visit the airline website and compare prices. I almost always end up buying my ticket directly from the airline to get the best deal.

If you regularly fly between two places, you’ll find before long that there’s usually only one or two airlines that consistently offer good deals on that route, so you can start keeping an eye on their websites only and save yourself some time.

Smaller Airlines

Another way to get cheap airfares is to look at some of the smaller carriers that travel to your destination. Sure, the big airlines will probably go there, but you might be able to find one of the smaller airlines, or even a charter airline that’s keen to get business and so offers cheap fares. Doing things this way might limit you from acquiring more frequent flier miles, and it may mean there’s only a couple of flights to choose from, rather than dozens, but it’s still a great way to get cheaper airfares.

When taking a vacation or a long trip by airplane, there are several things to consider and among them are having children along for the ride. On many long haul flights, children tend to become bored quickly and other passengers may begin to wish there was no law against them being in the cargo hold. Despite the fact that it is normal than on long haul flights children will get restless, it does not necessarily mean it is a good thing.

The slow pace of life on Malta might have contributed to the late introduction of low cost flights compared to her competitors, or it could have been politicians and the tourist authorities more interested in protecting the island’s national airline with attitudes that the rest of Europe began to shrug off in the 80’s, but whatever the reason, now that Malta has allowed the low cost airlines, they can’t get enough of them.

German tourists make up an important part of the European holiday market, along with the British. A low cost airline in Germany, Germanwings, started flights from Germany to Malta in late March, and with good bookings is looking to increase the number of flights to the island.

Commenting on the expansion plans, the airline said recently that it was very happy with its Malta route, and that the peak summer months were looking particularly good.

At the moment the flights to Malta are from Stuttgart and Cologne, and they would like to start flying from Hamburg in the autumn. Whether this will be allowed to happen though is problematic as Air Malta already serves the Hamburg route.

If flying from Hamburg to Malta doesn’t prove possible, the airline hopes that it will be able to increase the frequency of the routes it already has.As well as boosting the Malta holidays and hotel market, the arrival of increased numbers of tourists from Germany could also impact the Malta property market.

Property inflation in Malta has been high in recent years, with joining the EU a factor, and joining the Euro currency another.

The majority of sales in the past to overseas property buyers have been to the UK and Irish markets. But if German tourism rises it’s possible that this will add presuure to property prices again if the German tourists decide they like Malta enough to invest in a villa or holiday property.

*Try flying on off peak hours schedule. Usually if you take the before seven in the morning flight or the after seven in the evening flight, tickets are at their cheapest. This too, will be a wise decision since it is at these times that airlines are not overcrowded, thus getting more space for yourself and your luggage.

*Be sure to inquire if the airline offers travel packages. Some airlines do offer packages such as car rental discount or a hotel room discount that comes with the travel ticket.

* When you are flying off season, be very sure to ask about certain standby fares.

*Have an early booking. Promotions are usually offered when one reserves a ticket three weeks beforehand. Remember that due to over crowding during the holidays, you may not use your frequent flier miles. So book in advance if you plan to travel during the holidays.

*Staying with only one airline on your entire trip may too, give you discounts. Airlines offer special rates to round trip tickets or connecting flights.

This year has started well for the Malta holidays and hotel industry, with an increase in visitors for the first few months compared to 2006 - a good indication that if the off peak season is doing well the rest of the year could also see good gains in holiday tourists to the Mediterranean island.

The measurable increase for the first months of 2007 has come just a couple of months since Ryanair started low cost flights to Malta from London’s Luton Airport to the island, and later months could be boosted further after Ryanair started flying from Dublin to Malta as well.

Overall some predictions estimate that Malta will benefit in the 2007 holiday season by an extra 80,000 tourists, reversing the decline of recent years.

The airline had to wait some time for the Maltese authorities to finally relent and give the green light for the flights to start, with concern at one stage that if the low cost airlines walked away from the negotiating table that the island would slip from a mainstream holiday destination to one catering for specialist groups of travellers.

But hopes that popular low cost airline easyJet would provide further impetus for the Malta holiday trade seems to have been dashed with reports in the island’s press that talks have stalled, and a proposed London Gatwick route has been shelved.

A new low cost London Gatwick route would have provided competition for the island’s national airline, Air Malta, and possibly have reduced the cost of flying to Malta further.

Gatwick is located on the borders of Surrey and West Sussex and close to South and West London that would provide Malta with the possibility of extra affluent holiday makers.

In response to the arrival of Ryanair though, Air Malta has been offering reduced fares of its own, and has tried to defend her market share of the UK travelling public by starting a new route from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport in the North-West of England.

The suggested reason for Malta turning down the possibility of a new low cost route from the UK is that London Gatwick does have tour operators offering their own flights, either as part of a package, or on a seat only sale.

With the arrival of more holidaymakers, the possibility of increased property sales to overseas buyers becomes more of a reality as well, so the real estate sector as well as the holiday market is keeping a keen eye on arrival figures for the months ahead.

Some UK overseas property agencies who deal with property in Malta think that property prices could rise in 2007.

‘With lower fares, Malta becomes a destination viable for 3 and 4 days trips a few times a year from the UK, and that will attract buyers to look at Malta in the same way they do France and Spain when considering where to buy a holiday home abroad. Air travel has risen in the U.K with low cost airlines, it has reached the price range of everybody, so people now travel all over the world, rather than just holidaying in the U.K. There used to be two main airports Heathrow and Gatwick, now there are airports all over the country, you don’t have to travel far to find one. Road travel has also improved, a lot of the motorways are now four lanes instead of two, there are now more motorway service stations, where you can stop and get a meal and drink, as well as fuel, and public conveniences. The fact there are many more cars on the roads than in previous years, still causes major travel upheaval, with traffic jams in all directions, especially at weekends in the summer, when you have people going out for the day, and Bank Holidays, if the weather is nice. Also roadwork’s used to be a major contributor to traffic jams, especially during the holiday season, they now tend to stop roadworks for Bank Holidays and in the summer, mainly doing repair work through the night. Whereas before you could spend hours even days getting across the country, most distant places are now reachable within 5-6 hours.

Coach travel is also becoming popular in the U.K. especially for weekends away, maybe to London to see a show, or The Eden Project in Cornwall, it’s reasonably priced and includes accommodation, entrance fees and return travel, which is less hassle than taking the car and trying to find somewhere to park, and paying dearly for it.

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland since 1437, is considered one of the most dramatic cities in Europe because of its location, layout, and stunning architecture. Located in southeast Scotland, it is the country’s second largest city and a popular tourist destination.

The name Edinburgh is thought to have been derived from the Bythonic Din Eidyn, meaning Fort of Eidyn. This name came from the time period when the city was a Gododdin hillfort. Later, the English changed the name to Edin-burh.

In spite of its exceptional beauty, the city has a rather unique and humorous nickname Auld Reekie, which is Scots for “Old Smoky.” The name was coined in a time when the city was a little, well, smellier than it is today. At one time only coal and wood were available as fuels, so the city was frequently blanketed with a layer of smoke spilling from its chimneys. At the same time, the standards for cleanliness weren’t what they are today, so the city really did have an objectionable odor.

The historic center of Edinburgh contains two very notable areas of attraction. The first, Old Town, is an area that still follows the city plan of its medieval days and many of its Reformation-era buildings are still standing. At one end of Old Town sits a castle with the Royal Mile leading away from it down the spine of a large hill. Because the spine, or “tail,” of Old Town is quite narrow, the area quickly became crowded.

To alleviate the overpopulation of Old Town, in 1766 a competition was held to design the second area of historic Edinburgh, New Town. James Craig, a 22-year-old architect, won the competition and New Town was built according to his grid design. The main street of New Town was George Street with Princes Street and Queen Street on either side. Princes Street is the major shopping street in Edinburgh today.

Edinburgh is well-known for its many festivals and celebrations, which draw huge crowds every year. The most popular of these is the annual Edinburgh Festival, a four-week festival taking place between the end of July and the beginning of September. This festival is actually comprised of many separate events.

Other festivals include the Edinburgh Fringe (a huge festival of over 1867 different acts), Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, and T on the Fringe.

The most well known celebration held in Edinburgh is Hogmanay. This celebration began as a simple street party on Princes Street and the Royal Mile. Certain religious and cultural groups may need certain considerations when going through airport security. Security personnel have several options available to you to respect and consider your special needs.

Certain faiths require a head covering or a veil, and these needs are accommodated by security as much as possible. If, for whatever reason, you can not or do not want to go through the medal detector, security personnel will do a hand pat down with a wand.

You also have the right to a private area for the hand screening, with a security officer that is the same gender. This is because some religions and cultures have laws and taboos against any member of the opposite gender laying hands on them except for their family members. It should be noted, however, that if you refuse to participate in any part of the screening process you will not be allowed on board the aircraft.

For women who have religious beliefs that require a head covering or other religious garment, they have a right to wear these garments throughout the screening process and on the plane. If clothing is very loose or large and could possibly conceal items that are prohibited, additional screening measures may be necessary, whether the clothing in question is considered a religious garment or not. If additional screening is deemed necessary, a security officer of the same gender will re-screen the passenger using a pat down and a hand wand. This second pat down will include the torso area of the passenger. If the hand wand sounds an alarm anywhere on the religious garment or head covering, then the security officer will have to touch the area to verify that no contraband is present. In the rare instances where even this step fails to resolve the wand alert issue, then the security officer will give the passenger the opportunity, in a private area with no members of the opposite gender present, to remove the head covering and resolve the issue.

Under no circumstances are religious artifacts such as knives, daggers, swords, throwing stars, and other artifacts with the potential to be used as a weapon allowed in the cabin of an airplane. If you must take these items on your trip, put them in your checked baggage and make sure that you declare them. If you are caught trying to bring one of these prohibited weapons on board, you will face criminal penalties as well as not being able to board your flight.
