Cell Phones - The Need For Cell Phones

Have we grown so attached to our cell phones that without them, it would seem that we just aren’t complete? I mean how many times have you left home without your cell phone? I know that myself personally, I never leave home without my phone, even though most days I have very little need for it. So why is it that we just can’t seem to be without these little contraptions?

A Different View

As a young person, I grew up with a cell phone in my pocket. My mother however is the exact opposite. She grew up using pay phones on the side of the street. She like many people her age don’t conform to today’s society where cell phones have become as much apart of you as an arm or a leg!

My brother and I decided to buy her a new cell phone for Christmas and guess what we got in return? Tears!! That’s right my mother was so angry at the present we gave her, that it drove her to tears. She said and I quote, “I don’t want it, I don’t need it, get rid of it!” I couldn’t understand at first why she wouldn’t want to be in the possession of a new cell phone, a phone that was a lot better than mine at the time.

So I decided to find out why it was that she became so angry after being given a cell phone and this was her answer - “Because now I have to learn how to use it!” Sounds crazy right to you and me, us youngsters? However I thought about it and in the end it made quite perfect sense.

Techno-Fool

There’s a word for my mother, a ‘techno-fool’ and it basically people who seem to have fallen behind with the latest technology. It would seem that a lot of older people(I don’t mean that old, more middle-aged!) have started to find it so difficult to use a lot of today’s technology, that it actually pains them to even try it!

That’s what my mother was going through. She was so scared learning how to use her new cell phone that it actually drew her to tears! I found out later that it was more the fact that she was scared she wouldn’t know what to do if someone important called, what if she pressed the wrong button!

I thought about the whole term ‘techno-fool’ again and wondered if I was ever going to be given this label in the future and although my initial response was “no way!” I later realized that it was in fact inevitable. I mean what is the cell phone going to look like in 10, 20 or 50 years time. It really does scare me, maybe not to tears, but it does scare me!

Apple iPhone Users Get Busy Signal Buzz

If the new Apple iPhone exceeds expectations in any one category it is getting the hackers off the couch to figure out the electronic key needed to unlock the new phone. When Apple unleashed its newest and unparalleled Apple iPhone device, it was designed to work only with AT&T with the SIM chip included, but locked so the only way the phone will work is with a two-year contract with AT&T the carrier formerly known as Cingular.

While several people seem to love the Apple iPhone and have many nice things to say about it music and video player, being forced to sign with a specific wireless carrier for cell phone and internet browser use has several hackers locked in their rooms searching for the door to another service. Despite AT&T’s threat to prosecute anyone who unlocks the secret to their technology and is able to unlock the phone, the effort continues. Experts predict that within two weeks of the release the Apple iPhone will have been unlocked and being used on other networks.

Currently, the Apple iPhone is somewhat restricted to the United States for no other reason than economics. An average two-year contract with AT&T for over 4,000 minutes of use and unlimited wireless internet access will go for about $60 a month. For the neighbors up north, there is only one Canadian cell phone service compatible with AT&T and, due to less competition, a lesser level of service is going for about $200 a month. Add to that the $600 price tag for an Apple iPhone and this one-of-a-kind device is out of reach for most Canadian users.

The Apple iPhone was unleashed with great fanfare but initial silence by Apple about the coming technology seemed to fuel the hype behind the phone. The concept is a simple one: having every communications device known to man all in one handheld unit. Touch screen technology has been around for years, but having it installed on a device that fits into the back pocket of even the tightest pair of jeans made it one of the hottest, must-have commodities that people just had to have, despite the price and questionable service contract.

There are plenty of pitfalls with the new Apple iPhone, but none of them pose a permanent problem as the solutions will be easy to come up with, if they are’nt already in place, such as the digital camera also working as a video recorder. Easy fixes will be coming for being able to add ringtone the user chooses and will most likely add a better search tool for its address book. These are just a few of the complaints by the first users of the new Apple iPhone that should be easy to overcome.

Users Pushing For Additional Memories

Despite having the capability to play music and movies, as well as roam the internet and send and receive email and offers the functionality of a computer, the eight megabytes of memory has many people forgetting why they wanted it so bad in the first place. There is no place on the Apple iPhone for an additional memory card and its configuration with Windows and PC users is questionable at best. Of the Windows Office Suite, only Outlook is fully connectable with the Apple iPhone calendar. Outlook Express will not work, having some finding the need for the additional expenses of new software.

The battery, not replaceable by the user is another quirk of the Apple iPhone, similar to it music player, and has to go back to the factory for a new battery. Although the battery life has been greatly extended, up to nine hours with movie watching, music listening and browser viewing. A charging dock for the internal battery, which is included, promises to restore the battery from a 10 percent level to 90 percent in under two hours.

It’s not different when buying a cell phone online, you have to make sure you go with the biggest online retail stores, just to be sure nothing is going to go wrong as it has for so many people in the past.

Most of the big stores have secure payment methods that don’t allow for the passing of personal information like credit card details. Not only that but most of the larger online stores have more of a selection for you to choose from, meaning you’re going to end up getting a phone that you were able to compare to a lot more than if you just bought it from eBay.

Review Some Sites

Cell Phone Purchase Guide

To own a cell or mobile phone used to be a dream of most people not long ago. But as technology evolved and with the introduction of new players in the market, they became available with an affordable price range.

These days, cell phones can be found from different manufacturers and even the cheapest of them boast features such as FM radio, camera and MMS capabilities. Amid the wide-range of models available to the customers in the market, it is often difficult to make a perfect choice.

Although design and looks of mobile phones are factors that may influence one to make a purchase, the following are some important considerations that should be taken into account while buying a new device.

Contrary to what most people think, it is the calling plan that is more important than the cell phone itself. You may get a host of attractive features with the device but unless its calling plan is suitable for you, it is not worth buying it.

One important thing about a calling plan is the regional or nationwide service coverage. Imagine if you are going to extensively use your cell phone only within a particular region, then there is no point in getting a device having nationwide coverage. This can save you a substantial amount of money.

Also, choose the right cell phone plan for your calling habits. If you are the one who literally spend a fortune on their phone bills, then go for the services that offer saving schemes. Otherwise, you can opt for services that help you control your expenses on cell phones.

Think if you really need a camera phone. How often will you be using it in your day to day life ? Besides, most online service plan providers offer a free handset with their service plan. Some even offer a cash-back on the cell phone purchase. So, explore your options before buying a device.

Don`t go by the look of the cell phones. Eventually, it becomes outdated over the times. A bulky hand-set is difficult to carry around. So pick one that fits your size.

Pick a wireless carrier first then select the phone you want. Inquire your friends, relatives, and acquaintances if they are satisfied with the phone service they are using. Since, you will be using it in the same neighborhood they are the ones who can offer you the best advice on this.

Online purchase is always a good idea as you can get the accurate descriptions in writing before you buy. Shopping online allows you to know the plain truth about each phone and service. On the contrary, staffs of cell phone kiosks are paid on a commission basis and they always try to con the buyers into buying their phones at a higher rate. So you can never be sure about these buys.

Creative Cell Phone Savings

How would you like to cut your cell phone bill by 75% or more? Don’t think its possible? It might be, but you have to be creative.

If you don’t use your phone all that much, you’re probably paying way more than you need to. If you’ve looked around at rate plans from most of the providers, you know it’s difficult to find a rate plan for less than $39.99 a month. By the time you pay all the fees and taxes, you’re paying more than $500 a year for your cell phone. That’s outrageous!

But I recently found out about a great way to cut your bill. Someone told me, “Get T-Mobile To Go prepaid service. If you’re willing to pay for a block of 1,000 minutes ($100.00), it comes out to 10 cents/minute and the block of minutes is good for a full year. (The balance can even roll over if you buy another block of 1000 minutes before the 12 months expire.) That’s the equivalent to a cell phone plan for $8.33/month, and it has nationwide calling!”

What I really like about this plan is that there aren’t any extra fees or over-the-limit penalties!

And he also said “You can transfer your existing number to the prepaid service, and you may be able to use your existing cell phone, especially if you are with T-Mobile or Cingular already. Otherwise, you can buy a new cell phone with some prepaid minutes starting at $39.99, if you purchase it at a store such as Target. The last time I checked prepaid cell phone services, T-Mobile To Go, is significantly less expensive than any other plan out there (if you read the fine print, especially the prepaid expiration clauses).”

Again, the only drawback here is if you’re a heavy user. I pay $39.99/month for 1,000 minutes with Cingular. It’s more than I’d like to pay, but I’m on my cell phone all the time. So $100 for the 1,000 minutes, which I would use in a month or so is a lot for me to pay.

However, my wife’s plan is $29.99/month for 250 minutes. And she uses only a fraction of her minutes. So we’re paying about $400/year (after fees and taxes) for a lot minutes we don’t use. Compare that to the $100/year on the prepaid plan. Needless to say, we’re looking into the T-Mobile To Go plan. Perhaps you should too.

Cell Phones - Finding The Best Cell Phone For You

We are all different, therefore you probably require a completely different cell phone from a number of your friends. There are a few questions you can ask yourself to determine the particular cell phone that would best suit your needs.

What Kind Of Person Are You?

Who are you? What do you enjoy doing as a person? Do you like me, love listening to music or don’t you have enough time to sit around and listen to your favorite songs? Are you a person that prides yourself on you level of organization? You see the type of phone you need is directly related to the type of person you are and the type of life you lead.

So?

So ask yourself these few questions -

How Much Time Do I Have On Your Hands?

This question will determine whether or not it is necessary to get a cell phone that comes equipped with a bunch of media based extras. If you love taking photos and have a huge social life, then you just have to make sure you get a phone with a great camera and the ability to store a lot of photos. If you are too busy at work and in home life, then you probably won’t have much need for a good camera, because you won’t even get a chance to take full advantage of it!

You’re probably best suited for a PDA phone that comes standard with an organizer which will give you the ability to set appointments and make sure you are completely and utterly organized at work and at home.

Do You Live For Music?

I’m stir crazy about my music. I would spend all day listening to it if I didn’t have to go to work! Therefore I have a phone that has a great media player inbuilt in it. I can’t say what phone because I would probably get in trouble for endorsing it! I made sure that when I purchased the phone, it has the ability to take memory cards, because each song takes up a fair chunk of space and most cell phones only come standard with less than 50mg of inbuilt memory, which is nowhere near enough for me to keep all my songs on!

Music playing has become particularly popular just of late and most modern phones come with the ability to play music as standard, but if you are crazy about keeping lots of songs on your phone, then make sure the cell phone you are buying can take memory cards. That way you’ll be able to store hundred of songs easily!

Little Known Phone Sticker Squeals On Water Damage And Voids Warranty

If you take a look inside the case of your cell phone, you should see a round white sticker placed somewhere on the device.

What is it? This is called a water damage sticker and if your phone is exposed to moisture that makes its way inside the phone, this can be used to completely void your warranty, no matter the reason your phone may stop working.

It does not seem to take much, either; a simple drop of water placed onto this sticker is enough to change its color and void the warranty on your cell phone. For honest consumers who accidentally get a small bit of water on their phone and then 5 or 6 months later, suddenly notice that the phone is having problems, knowing about this sticker is quite useful.

What exactly can you do to stop this little devil from voiding the warranty on your phone should is accidentally get a little damp? The best thing that you can do is to take a piece of satin finished scotch tape and put it over the sticker to keep the color from changing if it gets wet.

If you drop your phone into the toilet or the bathtub, this probably isn’t going to be that effective, but if you are just worried about general moisture problems or an accidental quick spill of something on the phone, this should work just fine.

If your phone stops working for some other reason, remove the tape and take it back to the manufacturer for repairs or a replacement.

It is was not exactly a bad idea for these stickers to be put on the inside of phones, though; a lot of phones get returned that are supposedly not water damaged, but are.

At the same time, though, it is bad for the consumer because having such a sticker can completely void the warranty regardless of whether the liquid was the reason the phone stopped working or not. The phone could have just been a defective model and it would make no difference.

Hopefully people will use the information presented here honestly and not try to defraud the phone company into giving them a new item after their phone was irreparably damaged by having a hot cup of coffee spilled onto it or something like that.

For honest consumers just having a bit of bad luck, it is great to know these kinds of things about our electronics just in case. Unfortunately, there are those that will attempt to misuse this information.
